Anonymous asked: Can you please explain why we don't obey the following verses? : (Leviticus 11:7 ) (Leviticus 11:9-12) (Leviticus 20:18) (Leviticus 25:44-45) (Leviticus 19:19) Sorry, I can't quote them all because there's a character limit on the ask box :P
I created a quick video response for you and everyone else with this question.
And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. (Lev 11:7)
These you may eat, of all that are in the waters. Everything in the waters that has fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers, you may eat. But anything in the seas or the rivers that does not have fins and scales, of the swarming creatures in the waters and of the living creatures that are in the waters, is detestable to you. You shall regard them as detestable; you shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall detest their carcasses. Everything in the waters that does not have fins and scales is detestable to you. (Lev 11:9-12)
If a man lies with a woman during her menstrual period and uncovers her nakedness, he has made naked her fountain, and she has uncovered the fountain of her blood. Both of them shall be cut off from among their people. (Lev 20:18)
As for your male and female slaves whom you may have: you may buy male and female slaves from among the nations that are around you. You may also buy from among the strangers who sojourn with you and their clans that are with you, who have been born in your land, and they may be your property. (Lev 25:44-45)
You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. You shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of cloth made of two kinds of material. (Lev 19:19)
Because New Testament Christians are free from the law. I really can’t say it enough times! The Old Testament laws were God’s standards for the Israelites. We have a New Covenant, so we don’t have to obey them any more!
Leviticus 20:13 tells Christians to kill gays. Why are you ignoring that? Why does it seem like you’re just cherry-picking the parts of Leviticus that allow you to hate gays and ignoring the rest of it?
“Leviticus 20:13 tells Christians to kill gays.” What? Leviticus was written for the nation of Israel. You do realize that Christians weren’t even around back then, right? Not every verse in the Bible is a direct command to every person in the world. Christians don’t have to follow these Old Testament laws anymore.
Read the book of Romans. While you’re at it, read Galatians. Or the entire New Testament.
framesandflames asked: so, according to your last post, to be a good christian, you must be consistent with god's view, right? the entire bible? every word? how about Exodus 35:2 ? "2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death." I Imagine that you sir, may have done some form of work on a Sunday. I don't see how it's okay to pick and choose Bible verses you agree with and ignore the barbarism in some.
The Jews were commanded to rest and worship the Lord on the Sabbath, which is Saturday (Ezekiel 18:4; Rom. 6:23; Deut. 13:1-9; Num. 35:31; Lev. 20:2). Today most Christians worship on Sunday. They also generally do some kind of physical work on both Saturday and Sunday.
The Ten Commandments were direct commands to the people of the nation of Israel. So why do Christians today, when they are not under the Law of Moses (Rom 6:14), follow them? It turns out that nine of the ten commandments are reinstated in the New Testament (Matt 19:18, Rom 13:9). Guess which one isn’t? That’s right. Not working on the Sabbath.
Mark 2:27 says,
“The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath.”
In other words, the Sabbath was made to give man rest. It was not made just for man to observe it. But the Sabbath is fulfilled in Jesus. He is our rest (Matt 11:28)!
A verse in closing,
“Therefore let no one act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day— things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.” - Colossians 2:16-17
Don’t assume that just because New Testament Christians don’t follow the exact requirements of the Old Testament Law, they’re “picking and choosing” the verses they agree in. As Gentiles, we are not under the Old Covenant, which was delivered to Israel. This is taught plainly in the Bible itself.
